The Markgraven in Almelo are to be renovated to counter the current bottlenecks in terms of water quality and quantity and to facilitate its management.The renovation primarily consists of improving the banks along the brook. By doing this, we create a space for water to be stored in wetter seasons and the area can function in an ecologically friendly manner. Furthermore, space is made to install maintenance machines along the brook.

A draft has been made for the brook. Herein, the brook, which is in the form of a canal, is going to be transformed to have a more naturally flowing look. The weir is going to be replaced and the banks will be made to take a lobular pattern. In the pools after the dips, water is collected and slowly infiltrated to the bottom. Where the water level is higher than the weirs, the water streams into the pools. If the water level drops, the shallow pools stay stagnant for one or two days, before the water seeps into the ground.

The pools that are lower down are going to be full of water for around 80 days per year. In order to protect the pattern in times of high water levels, rough undergrowth will be stimulated around the area.

At the moment, the Markgraven have different summer and winter water levels. After the redevelopment plans are done, this is to be changed – and the level will remain constant throughout the year. In order to achieve this, the weir by the Robbenhaar estate has to be adjusted.

Bij de herinrichting wordt nadrukkelijk aangesloten bij de aanwezige landschappelijke kwaliteiten van het gebeid, zoals het landgoed Groot Robbenhaar. Na uitvoering van het plan Markgraven Almelo voldoet de Markgraven in Almelo weer aan de eisen van deze tijd zoals die gesteld worden in het Waterbeheerplan 2010 – 2015 waarin onder andere ook de doelen van de KRW en WB21 zijn vastgelegd.

The weir has to be passable for fish, allowing them to migrate freely. The brook will become more accessible because the sand paths by the creek are to be maintained.
