The Wierdense field is a remnant of a once extensive peat landscape in the region of Twente. The area has largely been excavated for the peat. In the area moist heath and some birch groves grow. Within the high peat, the Pleistocene sand is locally very pronounced, causing dry heath to occur on deck sand ridges. On the lower parts, there are some water-filled peat pits. On 11 November 2016, the State Secretary for Economic Affairs designated the Wierdense Veld as a Natura 2000 site. Makan has carried out 4 landscape surveys and translated these into image sections of the area

In these image sections, the characteristic features of the area are mapped. Once this was an area with a lot of wet heathland and plenty of high moor. Now it is a nature reserve with grassy dry heath and a poor high moor. The Wierdense Veld has become increasingly dry in recent decades. In a sub-area near the Prinsendijk, the groundwater level has been locally increased by burying a foil screen.

The challenge is to revitalize high peat by increasing the water level. Results of this measure become slowly visible by the recurrence of species such as annual wool grass, sundew, small cranberry, bog-rosemary and peat moss.

In the cross-section image, a relationship is established between groundwater flows of desiccated areas and areas where bogging takes place due to the correct inflow of groundwater.
