The town of Vorden lies in the municipality of Bronckhorst, around 10 kilometres southeast of Zutphen. For some time, the Bronckhorst municipality has been developing a plan to redevelop the public space in the centre of Vorden. The plan, named the Masterplan for the town centre of Vorden, was approved by the municipal council in January 2010. The Master plan was thought out on a general scale, and now the technical and design aspects need to be agreed upon so that it can be carried out effectively.

OPG Landscape and Roelofs Advies en Ontwerp requested of Makan a partnership to put the Master plan into effect. Several points of importance were raised. Firstly, the possible strain to traffic on the Zutphensestraat/Dorpstraat caused by construction had to be resolved. Furthermore, we wanted to give the town a sustainably green air. Thirdly, the town centre had to be transformed into an area where pedestrians are willing to stay.

Surrounding the horse chestnut tree in the central grass fields, we propose to place a long round bench where visitors can sit down and enjoy their ice cream in the sun.

In order to ensure the continuation of security in traffic, the proposed policy will be to create a maximum speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour in the zone of the town centre. Additionally, the roads around Vorden will be indicated as through-roads for general traffic. In the centre, the road will be narrowed down to 5.5 metres in width, and by creating a special junction.

There are many trees in the town centre. Because the tree islands were limited in size, a lot of the trees became sick or were unable to continue growing. With the new developments, we propose to plant a new row of English Oak trees along the Zutphensestraat/Dorpstraat. The trees will be planted in a specially designed planting strip; one where the surface has a double layer, so the trees aren’t pressured into compaction by the street around it.
