For the family Kuipers in the Roombeek district in Enschede a roof garden was designed. The lot is so small that there is no place for a garden, yet the family wanted a piece of garden / nature experience close to home. Bert Kuipers owns an art gallery and wanted to create something special involving the roof of the barn. The concept is to use the motif of a marbled paper pattern for a planting plan for the roof. The roof becomes a living painting in which the pattern changes with colour and height every season.

Marble paper shows a wide variety of patterns. This variation in patterns is linked to a flowering schedule of various plants that are suitable for the roof. Just like the marbled paper, the colors of the plants flow; every season there is a different color scheme that blooms. This keeps it interesting to look at the roof.

Because the roof is calculated on a Sedum plantation, we used plants that can grow in little substrate, such as ornamental grass Sesleria caerulea and Festuca / Stipa. Several accent plants have been placed between the Sedums such as Lychnis, Armeria, and Pulsatilla Rubra.

The ecological value of a sedum roof with drought-resistant plants is that it attracts all kinds of insects and therefore increases biodiversity in the predominantly urban environment.
