Wierdense Veld photo 1

The Wierdense field is a remnant of a once extensive peat landscape in the region of Twente. The area has largely been excavated for the peat. In the area moist heath and some birch groves grow. Within the high peat, the Pleistocene sand is locally very pronounced, causing dry heath to occur on deck sand ridges. On the lower parts, there are some water-filled peat pits. On 11 November 2016, the State Secretary for Economic Affairs designated the Wierdense Veld as a Natura 2000 site. Makan has carried out 4 landscape surveys and translated these into image sections of the area
